Product description

This vase does not immediately catch the eye. And then, one's gaze settles on the dragon. It emerges from the clouds in relief, head turned at a three-quarter angle, its sinuous body coiling around the spherical belly of the piece and snaking up the cylindrical neck in swirls of smoke. The decoration is modeled, not simply painted: each curve was built into the clay before firing, then highlighted in a deep brown against a crackled ivory-white glaze. This crazing, known as kannyu, is intentional: it forms during the rapid cooling of the kiln, when the glaze contracts faster than the stoneware. Over time, it darkens slightly and gains depth. This piece already possesses that patina. It has clearly lived. Placed alone on a shelf, it does not need a flower to exist. But a bamboo branch or a seasonal iris would suit it perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the dragon motif painted or modelled?

It is modelled: each curve was built in the clay before firing, then picked out in a deep brown.

What is the crackle visible on the glaze?

It is kannyu, an intended effect that forms during rapid cooling of the kiln, when the glaze contracts faster than the stoneware.

Can I use it with flowers?

Yes, for cut flowers such as iris, peony or a plum branch, or on its own as a piece to contemplate.

How to use it?

A Japanese container for arranging flowers: ikebana favours a few well-placed stems over a large bouquet.
What it is for: you arrange a branch, a seasonal stem or a few grasses in it to dress a corner of the home.
Use it as a vase for cut flowers: a bamboo branch, a seasonal iris, a peony or a plum branch.
Or set it on its own on a shelf, a low piece of furniture or a tokonoma: it needs no flower.
Wash by hand and dry carefully.
Idea: fewer flowers is better: one or two well-chosen stems are enough to dress up a corner of a shelf.
Good to know: change the water every two days and recut the stems at an angle, so flowers last longer.
