Dogou (道具), everyday Japanese utensils
Japanese objects designed to cook better and live more simply.
In Japanese, dogu (道具) means “tool”, “utensil”.
We write it Dogou , in French, so that its pronunciation remains faithful to the Japanese language. But here, this word designates much more than an object: it embodies simplicity, beauty in use, the elegance of everyday gestures. It is this humble and refined approach that has always fascinated me.
The simplicity of Japanese utensils, enhanced by gesture.
From France to Japan, a bond of the heart
A story of family and passion
My name is Léonard, founder of Dogou.
For ten years, I have travelled to Japan every winter to spend the New Year with my in-laws in Yokohama. These stays have become a ritual, a precious family time. It is also where I discovered something that struck me: the way the Japanese design everyday objects. Simple, ingenious, discreet utensils that make life easier, and more beautiful.
A story born in the heart of family meals in Japan.
How Dogou began
When the idea becomes reality
I knew I wanted to create a project between France and Japan. When I realised that these clever, elegant objects were almost impossible to find here, Dogou was born. It is not a souvenir shop: it is a bridge between two cultures, for everyday objects that make sense.
The idea: to introduce these everyday treasures to France
Essentially Japanese, entirely authentic
A selection designed to last
At Dogou, the vast majority of utensils are made in Japan, chosen on site with the invaluable help of my Japanese family. Each object reflects what makes Japanese tools distinctive: clever design, understated aesthetics and quality that lasts. Even when a product comes from elsewhere, it meets the same standard.
A collection faithful to the Japanese spirit, down to the smallest details.
Kappabashi, Tokyo My playground
Where it all begins
Every trip to Japan takes me to Kappabashi, Tokyo's kitchenware district. You'll find everything from omelet whisks to onigiri molds, knives to perfect bowls. This is where Dogou draws his inspiration.
Kappabashi, a paradise for food lovers.
Where we stand today
Building a bridge between two cultures takes time.
Dogou is growing at its own pace, and that is intentional. I chose to open this shop with something precious: my personal collection of vintage Japanese objects. Rare and authentic pieces, gathered over the years and through my travels, each with its own story.
It is the most honest way I could find to start with something real, tangible, and already existing. New items join the selection regularly, as I make new discoveries and return to Japan.
Every piece available today has been carefully chosen. None are waiting.
