Product description

This teapot is a potter’s piece in the truest sense of the word. Its cylindrical sandy stoneware body features a kikko design, a hexagonal pattern inspired by the tortoise shell, a Japanese symbol of longevity and strength. Each hexagon is hand-incised into the clay, then highlighted in white before firing: the contrast between the ochre body and the light lines creates a textured, almost tactile surface. The lid and handle tell a different story: a deep green-brown glaze, nearly black in places, as glossy and dense as armor. The square handle with slightly raised corners is a potter's signature, designed as much for grip as for aesthetics. The horizontal, sharp-edged spout pours with precision. This teapot makes tea. It makes it well. And it stays there on the table afterward, because you don’t want to put it away.

Care: this stoneware teapot should be washed by hand, not in the dishwasher; avoid sudden thermal shock, such as ice water on a still-hot teapot, which could crack the glaze.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the kikko pattern incised on this teapot symbolise?

It is a hexagonal pattern inspired by a tortoise shell, a Japanese symbol of longevity and strength.

How do I prepare this teapot before first use?

Rinse it with hot water before first use, without detergent, then let it air-dry.

Will the unglazed stoneware change with use?

Yes, it absorbs the tea over time and improves.

How to use it?

A Japanese teapot, suited to green teas such as sencha, hōjicha or gyokuro.
What it is for: you steep the leaves in hot water, then pour straight into the cups.
Brew a Japanese green tea in it: sencha, hojicha or gyokuro. The horizontal, sharp-edged spout pours precisely.
Rinse with hot water before first use.
Wash by hand, with no detergent: rinse in water and air dry. No dishwasher.
Avoid sudden thermal shock, such as ice water on the still-hot teapot, which could crack the glaze. The unglazed stoneware absorbs the tea over time.
Idea: brew a sencha in the morning, a hōjicha in the afternoon, and use the same piece for both.
Good to know: for Japanese green tea, water around 70 to 80 °C avoids bitterness, and the leaves handle two or three infusions.
