Product description

Also available in the Homemade Sushi Kit, for €65 instead of €80.

This new makisu, still in its original packaging, is made of bamboo slats held together by a PP cord, which is more resistant to repeated moisture than a standard cotton cord. The label, printed in Japan, specifies its professional use (業務用) and its size, 27 x 27 cm.

This format, wider than the standard 24 cm size, is the one sought after for futomaki, those thick rolls filled with multiple ingredients, or for rolling tamagoyaki without the edges sticking out. You place the nori sheet across the entire surface, pack the rice and filling, then roll in one continuous motion using the edge of the makisu as a guide.

Sourced directly from Japan, this makisu is sold new, still in its original sealed packaging, with its Japanese label and barcode visible. Professional format, designed for intensive use.

Care: rinse with clear water after each use, without harsh detergents, then air dry flat. The PP cord withstands repeated moisture better than a cotton cord, but should still be kept out of the dishwasher.

Dimensions: 27 x 27 cm

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this 27x27 size differ from a standard makisu?

It is wider than the standard 24 cm size, designed for futomaki (thick rolls with several ingredients) or for rolling a tamagoyaki without the edges sticking out.

Why is the cord made of PP rather than cotton?

It stands up better to repeated moisture than a classic cotton cord.

How do I roll a futomaki with this makisu?

Lay the sheet of nori over the whole surface, press down the rice and filling, then roll in one continuous movement.

Size

How to use it?

A makisu is a bamboo mat used in Japan to roll sushi.
What it is for: you lay a nori sheet, rice and filling on it, then roll and press to form a firm maki.
Use it for futomaki, the thick roll with several fillings: lay the nori sheet across the full width and spread the rice generously.
Add several fillings side by side (omelette, cucumber, fish), then roll firmly in one continuous motion.
This size, wider than the standard 24 cm, also suits rolling a tamagoyaki without the edges overhanging.
Rinse in clear water after use and let it dry flat, never rolled up damp.
Idea: host a shared meal where everyone makes their own rolls or noodles at the table.
Good to know: bamboo does not like staying damp: let it air dry before putting it away.

Full tuna-avocado-cucumber-egg futomaki, or inside-out California roll, rice on the outside (I'll leave it to your discretion).
