Product description
How to use it
Slide the pocket onto the waistband of a maekake or onto a trouser belt for quick and accessible storage.
Why it is different
Hand-stitched from fabric scraps left over from making maekake—pieces of dense cotton, woven on old Toyota looms, that are too beautiful to throw away. The width varies slightly from one pocket to another, depending on the scraps available at the time of production: each piece is therefore slightly different.
Why this pocket instead of a new accessory
It embodies *mottainai* (もったいない), the Japanese concept of regret for waste: to waste nothing, to give a second life to materials, and to find the right form for every use rather than producing an additional accessory from new fabric.
Why I chose it
"I chose this accessory because it shows that an object can evolve without needing to be reinvented. The maekake is already a functional object, and this small accessory simply adds extra capacity. I really like this way of gradually improving an existing object. It is discreet, practical, and above all, very consistent with the Dogou philosophy: thinking more carefully about everyday actions."
You will like it if
- you already own a Dogou maekake and are looking for a complementary accessory
- you appreciate a piece made from scraps rather than new fabric
- you accept that no two pieces are strictly identical
It is probably not for you if
- you are looking for a pocket with perfectly standardized dimensions
- you do not wear a maekake or a belt on which to slide it
In practice
100% cotton, length 23.5 cm, width 12–15 cm (varies by production). Wash separately at a low temperature; avoid bleach, tumble drying, and fabric softeners.
An object designed to last
The fabric develops a patina with use rather than wearing out, provided it is washed gently and regularly.
