Product description

At first glance, it looks like a wicker basket. It is not a basket. It is porcelain. Each interwoven strip of the wall has been individually shaped, assembled, and fired. The sukashi-bori technique, porcelain openwork, is one of the most delicate in Japanese ceramics: it tolerates no errors, no touch-ups, no shortcuts. The slightest crack during drying or firing and the piece is lost. The result is this white stemmed bowl, visually light despite the stoneware, with a wall that lets light shine through. At the bottom, a cobalt blue medallion depicts a blooming peony within a circle of beads. On the scalloped edge, a frieze of hand-painted chrysanthemums and foliage. At the base, a band of stylized waves. Three distinct decorative registers, perfect coherence. This bowl is made for holding fruit, pastries, an arrangement. It is also made to simply be there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the openwork wall of this cup made?

Using the sukashi-bori technique, each bar is shaped individually in porcelain, then assembled and fired; the slightest crack during drying or firing makes the piece impossible to save.

Can I put flowers in it?

Yes, by placing a small water container at the bottom for a flower arrangement.

How do I clean it without damaging it?

Wash it very gently by hand, without brushing the openwork wall, and do not stack it.

How to use it?

A Japanese ceramic serving piece, set on the table to share a dish, or used as a large meal bowl.
What it is for: you serve salads, cold dishes, fruit or stews in it so everyone helps themselves.
Use it as a fruit bowl, for Japanese sweets (wagashi), or as a table centrepiece.
For a flower arrangement, place a small container of water at the bottom.
Wash very gently by hand, without brushing the openwork wall.
Do not stack it or store it under pressure.
Idea: at breakfast, fill it with yogurt, fresh fruit and granola, or hot rice with an egg.
Good to know: slight variations in shape, colour or glaze are possible from one piece to another.
