Product description

Stoneware with a finely crackled ivory glaze (kannyu), encircled by two red lines at the rim and the base. Between these, a branch with pointed green leaves and clusters of red berries unfolds, reminiscent of nanten (sacred bamboo), a plant traditionally associated with the Japanese New Year and considered a bringer of good luck. It crosses a radiating geometric motif traced in gold, likely a stylized family crest (mon). On the inside bottom, a small golden crescent discreetly marks the center of the bowl.

A bowl of this size fits in the hand for daily rice: you hold it, you do not set it down to serve yourself. Its crackled glaze develops a patina over time, as the network of fine fissures deepens and becomes slightly colored with each wash, making each piece unique after years of use.

A two-character mark is incised under the foot, but it remains impossible to read with certainty; it is impossible to attribute this piece to a specific workshop. It belongs to the same decorative family as other pieces with crackled glaze and gold decoration already seen (such as the zodiac character bowl), though one cannot claim it comes from the same set.

Care: hand wash only. The gilding and enamels suffer from dishwashers and abrasive sponges; this bowl should be wiped with a soft cloth.

Estimated dimensions: diameter 11 to 12 cm, height 6 to 7 cm (to be confirmed by direct measurement).
