Product description

This Oribe chawan is a statement. In a ceramic world often dominated by sobriety and monochrome, Oribe has always managed to take the opposite approach with an almost insolent freedom. A creamy white base crossed by vivid emerald green drips, grey-black blocks of color applied like brushstrokes, touches of rust brown piercing through here and there: this bowl looks as much like an abstract painting as it does a ceremonial object.

The interior reveals a geometric pattern of chevrons and black and green stripes of troubling modernity, as if a contemporary artist had decided to play with the codes of a four-century-old tradition. And yet, everything here is profoundly Japanese: the hand-faceted shape, the deliberate irregularity of the rim, the partially glazed foot.

This bowl is not meant to be contemplated from afar. It is held in the hands, turned, and discovered from every angle. Only one piece available, for those who dare to embrace beauty that is slightly unsettling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does this bowl's Oribe glaze come from?

It is a ceramic tradition from the Momoyama period, known for its freedom of colours and patterns, here emerald green, black and rust brown.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No, to keep the glazes bright, wash it by hand in clean water, without harsh detergent.

Is there a traditional gesture before serving in this bowl?

Yes, by tradition it is turned between the hands before serving, to appreciate each side.

How to use it?

A chawan is a Japanese tea bowl, here made for matcha, the powdered green tea whisked in hot water.
What it is for: you add the powder and water, whisk with a chasen, then drink straight from the bowl. Its wide shape leaves room for the whisking.
Warm the bowl with hot water before preparing matcha: the green of the Oribe glaze echoes the bright green of the tea.
Following tradition, turn the bowl in your hands before serving, to appreciate each side.
Wash by hand in clear water, without harsh detergent. No dishwasher, to preserve the glazes' shine.
Dry with a soft cloth right after washing.
Idea: serve the matcha with a wagashi or a lightly sweet biscuit, which the tea balances.
Good to know: whisk the matcha just before drinking and enjoy it hot, in three or four sips.
