bol-gres-glacure-cendree-coulee-vintage
Stoneware bowl with ash glaze drip

Hand-thrown stoneware with a dark, almost black, tenmoku-style glaze, streaked on one side by a light, slightly grainy ash glaze drip. This contrast between the dark background and the pale trail is not painted: it is a second glaze poured over the first before firing, which melts and sets differently on the surface. The interior features the concentric circles left by the throwing process, and the unglazed foot reveals the raw clay and the mark of the wire used to cut the piece from the wheel.

This shape, with its wide opening and narrowed foot, is that of a classic Japanese rice or soup bowl: it is meant to be held in the hand rather than left on the table, and its thin wall quickly transmits the warmth of hot rice or miso broth. The slightly conical bottom gathers the last grains of rice into a single bite, rather than letting them scatter as they would in a Western-style bowl.

The piece has no signature or mark visible under the base: it is impossible to attribute this ash drip to a specific workshop or region. We remain cautious regarding its exact origin, while being able to confirm with certainty the technique employed: it is indeed a hand-poured ash glaze, not a painted decoration.

Care: hand washing is recommended to preserve the matte finish of the ash glaze. Avoid sudden thermal shocks and moving the piece directly from the refrigerator to the oven.

Estimated dimensions: diameter 12 to 13 cm, height 6 to 7 cm (to be confirmed by direct measurement).
